National Teacher of the Year Mandy Manning to speak at EWU Graduation

Eastern Washington University is pleased to welcome the 2018 National Teacher of the Year and Eagle alumna, Mandy Manning, as this year’s commencement speaker.

Manning was named National Teacher of the Year for her work with immigrant and refugee students at the Newcomer Center at Spokane’s Ferris High School. She spent the past academic year traveling the country advocating for teachers and promoting social justice for students of all ages and backgrounds. After her official duties as National Teacher of the Year are completed this summer, Manning will to return to the classroom in the fall.

Manning earned a degree in radio/TV from EWU in 1998. But in an interview with Eastern Magazine in early 2018, Manning said that she felt drawn toward education in the years that followed. She would go on to teach communications, media, language arts, fine arts and English as a second language in Texas, New York and Japan before settling in Spokane.

Eastern has 2,922 undergraduate and 536 graduate students eligible to attend commencement ceremonies on Saturday, June 15, at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. The university will host two ceremonies to honor graduates and Mandy Manning will share her experiences during both.

The 9 a.m. ceremony will include graduates from the following colleges:

• The College of Business & Public Administration (CBPA)
• The College of Social Sciences (CSS)

The 2 p.m. ceremony will include graduates from the following colleges:

• The College of Arts, Letters & Education (CALE)
• The College of Health Science & Public Health (CHSPH)
• The College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CSTEM)
